Two Days in Tubac:
an Itinerary
You probably know Tubac offers a unique blend of art, history, and natural beauty—it’s what calls you to hit the road to explore the Santa Cruz Valley. What you might not know are the gems found all along the way. Pack your bags, gas up the car, and follow this itinerary to help you make the most of your two-day adventure.
Day 1
History and Art Immersion
Step back in time to the Cold War era at the Titan Missile Museum to experience the preserved Titan II missile site. Officially known as complex 571-7, this is all that remains of the 54 Titan II missile sites on alert across the United States from 1963 to 1987. You’ll descend 55 stairs into the underground silo for a 45-minute guided tour of the launch facility and witness the power of a Titan II missile while learning about this nuclear weapon's history, technology, and impact.
Next, stop at Arizona's first European settlement, Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. Wander through the ruins of the Spanish Presidio and archaeological site. Experience interpretive exhibits with many original artifacts, including early Native American archaeological and ethnographic collections, Spanish colonial and missions, mining, ranching, Civil War, Arizona Territorial Period, women and children, and the original Washington printing press that printed Arizona’s first newspaper in 1859. Stroll through the 11-acre park garden flourishing with herbs and vegetables, flowers, and succulents before you pick up some souvenirs in the gift shop.
Dine at Shelby's Bistro for pizza, pasta, sandwiches, and more to enjoy a unique taste of the region (Old Faithful Pizza is a local favorite) in a charming atmosphere. If you’d like to kick it up a notch, choose Elvira's and savor a new Mexican fusion
cuisine at this fine dining family-owned
restaurant, which serves its famous enchiladas, mole, and more.
Spend the afternoon at the Tubac Center of the Arts and immerse yourself in the local art scene. Your options are practically endless, from looking at art in the galleries to making your own masterpieces at a workshop or catching live performances.

Day 2
Nature and Cultural Exploration

Walking the Anza Trail.

The signature tequila sea salt ice cream from Wisdom's Cafe.

Start your day at Tumacácori National Historical Park, exploring the ruins of a 17th-century Spanish mission. Learn about the lives of the missionaries and Native Americans who once inhabited this important site. Don't miss checking out the restored church and the museum's exhibits.
If you want to stretch your legs, don't miss the 4-mile Anza Trail, a scenic hike that connects to Tumacácori National Historical Park. The beautiful desert landscape offers a variety of trails, ranging from easy to challenging. Just be sure to take plenty of water, wear sun protection, and keep in mind the temperatures.
When you’re ready for lunch, have a Wild West-inspired meal at Longhorn Grill and Saloon. Ideal for hearty appetites, the delicious dishes are served in a historic saloon, complete with cowboy decor and live music. Or you can go to Tumacácori and drop by Wisdom's Cafe, home to the world's famous fruit burrito and award-winning margaritas. You'll find regional Mexican dishes in addition to family-pleasing staples, including burgers and salads in this family-owned eatery. Top it all off with their signature tequila sea salt ice cream.
Spend the afternoon in Tumacácori. The Santa Cruz Chili & Spice Company can’t be missed. Since 1943, they’ve been a favorite place to get chili peppers, spices, and sauces (there are so many spices inside, you’ll smell them in the parking lot!). At the Tumacacori Mesquite Sawmill, you can witness the craftsmanship of local artisans transforming mesquite wood into beautiful furniture and art pieces. End the day in Nogales and experience a taste of Mexico without crossing the border. You’ll discover a vibrant market where you can shop for souvenirs and enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.
